Beware of Automatic Transmission Fluid Additives

To simplify matters and reduce costs, many transmission fluid installers rely on ATF additives to fortify used fluid, “update” less expensive outdated fluid or add an extra level of protection. Claims by ATF additive manufacturers lead consumers to believe the additives provide everything transmissions need to perform well and last longer. Despite such claims, however, most vehicle and transmission manufacturers specifically warn against using them.

Test data from industry studies demonstrates the shortfalls of a typical ATF additive in the areas of frictional performance, wear protection and cold-temperature performance, while the data also identifies a situation where the ATF additives degraded the performance of the original fluid enough that it no longer met the requirements of the specification for which it was designed.

See the January AMSOIL Magazine or the Automatic Transmission Fluid Additives Technical Service Bulletin for more information.

AMSOIL Introduces 15,000-Mile Ea® Oil Filters

Smaller sump sizes, smaller filter sizes, engines prone to sludge and increased contaminants in engine oil present a serious challenge to filtration engineers. AMSOIL has overcome all those obstacles with its introduction of 15,000-mile Ea Oil Filters (EA15K). Featuring the same premium nanofiber synthetic media as EAO filters, there are 11 15,000-mile Ea Filters in all, including some that were previously available as 25,000-mile filters. While AMSOIL has had no issues with these filters, the engine technologies used in the vehicles to which they apply are simply too demanding on an oil filter to continue offering 25,000-mile intervals.

Also included in the group of 15,000-mile Ea Oil Filters are a number of filters (EA15K09, EA15K10, EA15K13) that were either discontinued or available only at OEM-recommended intervals due to the engine design issues outlined in AMSOIL Technical Service Bulletins FL-2009-05-01 and FL-2010-04-01. There has been a high demand for the reintroduction of these oil filters, and now annual oil and filter change intervals are once again possible for the corresponding applications.

See the January AMSOIL Magazine for more information.

Select Diesel Recovery Package Sizes Discontinued, Available at Reduced Pricing

Due to limited sales, Diesel Recovery (DRC) one-gallon bottles, five-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums are discontinued and available while supplies last. Diesel Recovery is still available in 30-ounce bottles. Discontinued package sizes are available at reduced prices and revised commissions. AMSOIL will not accept returns on these sale-priced, discontinued items.

Diesel Recovery quickly and effectively dissolves the wax crystals that form when diesel fuel surpasses its cloud point. It liquefies gelled diesel fuel, thaws frozen fuel filters and reduces the need for a new filter, saving money and allowing the operator to continue driving with minimal downtime. Diesel Recovery performs well in all diesel fuels, including ULSD, off-road and biodiesel and is alcohol-free and non-corrosive.

The Next Bite Host Impressed with Improved Fuel Economy

National Fresh Water Fishing Hall-of-Famer Gary Parsons, one of the hosts of the popular AMSOIL-sponsored fishing program The Next Bite on the Versus Network, could not hide his excitement about gaining improved fuel economy with AMSOIL products, writing the following:

I thought I’d drop you a note since I’m pretty excited. I switched all three of my trucks to AMSOIL products over the last few days: engine oil, transmission, front and rear differentials. The news is about my tournament truck. I have a 2011 Ford F250 with the new diesel engine. Before I made the lubricant switch, I filled the truck with diesel and headed to Duluth (Minn.) to get some work done. I was bucking a head wind and got 17.8 miles per gallon, which is pretty normal going against a 30 mph wind. I got the lubricants switched and some other work done on the truck, so it stayed overnight. The next day I came back with my wife’s truck to get her lubricants switched. That day we drove both vehicles back home, and this is where it got interesting. The wind was dead calm and I wanted to see what happened to the gas mileage, so I drove the speed limit and used the speed control on the truck most of the way. I’ve made this trip from Duluth to my house many times where I tried to get the best gas mileage, probably no less than six times when I was watching closely. The best mileage that I ever got on the stretch between Duluth and Ashland (Wis.) was 20.4 mpg, and since the stretch between Ashland and my house is really hilly, the mileage goes down and the best overall performance when I reach my house has been 19.4 mpg. Using the same diesel fill as when I took the truck to Duluth, I got 22.4 mpg from Duluth to Ashland and 21.3 when I got home! That’s almost two miles per gallon better by just switching to the AMSOIL lubricants! I would have never believed that it would have made such a difference, especially since Ford uses synthetics in the new diesels already. All I can say is WOW!

Dominator® Coolant Boost Reduces Engine Warm-Up Times in Cold Weather

AMSOIL Dominator® Coolant Boost is designed to reduce corrosion and significantly enhance heat transfer in cooling systems. One of the overlooked benefits of better heat transfer is much quicker engine warm-up in winter conditions, which is noticed when the vehicle’s defroster works much sooner.

To understand how Dominator Coolant Boost reduces engine warm-up times in cold weather, it is imperative to understand the fundamentals of an engine’s cooling system and how Coolant Boost’s proprietary tiered surfactant technology works. The same tiered surfactant technology that aids in reducing engine operating temperatures also decreases engine warm-up times.

In a vehicle’s cooling system, the ultimate goal is to quickly and effectively move heat away from engine components, permitting the engine to run at a safe, controlled temperature. An effective cooling system reduces stress on all aspects of the engine, including the lubricating oil. Alternatively, a corroded cooling system that transfers heat ineffectively will eventually lead to engine overheating, breakdown of engine oil and catastrophic failure.

Before covering tiered surfactants, it is important to understand what a surfactant does in a cooling system. A surfactant reduces the surface tension of water and antifreeze, allowing closer contact with metal parts. This closer contact increases the coolant’s efficiency in transferring heat away from hot engine parts and out through the radiator and fan.

Many leading coolant additives contain only one surfactant, limiting the temperature range and ultimate effectiveness. AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Boost utilizes three surfactants, each designed to operate in a different temperature range to increase liquid-to-metal contact from startup to operating temperature.

The graphic below illustrates how each surfactant in Coolant Boost’s tiered surfactant technology is designed to provide optimal performance over a wide temperature range, while competing products with only one surfactant are limited to performance in a single temperature range.

The table below outlines controlled testing of AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Boost with a 50/50 antifreeze/water mix.  When a cooling system reaches 120°F, the operator typically feels warm air coming out of the defroster.  The time it takes to reach this temperature with Coolant Boost is reduced by 45 percent compared to the 50/50 antifreeze/water mix alone.

Through the use of tiered surfactants, AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Boost delivers quicker warm-up times in the winter and engine temperature reductions in the summer, making it an excellent choice for year round use.

Stock Code Changes for Retail Catalog, New Free Label Program

Effective December 1, in order to increase efficiency and reduce back orders, AMSOIL Retail Catalogs (G100 U.S., G300 Canada, G100S Spanish) will use the unit of measure system to indicate quantities, and the previous G100A-F, G300A-F and G100SA stock codes will be obsolete.

Dealers who order 900 or more catalogs using product code G100-PK receive free catalog labels from the AMSOIL Print Center. The free label promotion is only valid when catalogs are ordered in groups of 300 using product code G100-PK. For example, a Dealer who orders four G100-PK (1,200 catalogs) will receive 1,200 free labels; however, a Dealer who orders three G100-PK and one G100-CA (1,000 catalogs) will only receive 900 free labels.

How It Works
A Dealer who places a qualifying order receives a promotional code in his or her Message Center inbox. To redeem the promotional code, go to the Print Center, choose the Catalog Upgrade Labels, submit the information to be printed on the labels and enter the promotional code at checkout. Because the code must be manually activated in the Print Center, Dealers must wait one business day before attempting to redeem the code. Promotional codes expire 60 days from date of purchase.

Introducing AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oils

In order to meet the demand for a lower-cost synthetic motor oil, and to provide customers a stepping stone to the top-tier line of AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, AMSOIL is introducing the AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oil line. Priced competitively with other standard-drain synthetic motor oils, OE Synthetic Motor Oils offer the protection and performance benefits of a high-quality synthetic for OEM-recommended drain intervals, providing Dealers with a huge opportunity to reach new customers.

AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oils are designed as an entry-level product for customers who want to move up to synthetic quality, but won’t pay a significantly higher price than a conventional product and/or aren’t initially interested in extending their drain intervals. OE Synthetic Motor Oils are an excellent door-opener for Dealers, who can later teach satisfied customers the benefits of stepping up to a top-tier AMSOIL synthetic motor oil and saving money through extended drain intervals, as well as introduce them to the rest of the AMSOIL product line.

AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oils will help AMSOIL and its Dealers penetrate a portion of the motor oil market that has been a more difficult sell, including the installer market, commercial fleets, cost-conscious customers and customers hesitant about taking advantage of extended drain intervals.

See the November AMSOIL Magazine for more information. View the Voice-over PowerPoint (VOPP) in the Dealer Zone (under the Training tab) to learn more about the existing lubricant market, the future direction of the market and the reasons behind introducing this new line of motor oils.

New European Car Formula Provides Added Sales Potential

New AMSOIL European Car Formula 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (AEL) provides exceptional performance and protection for high-performance European vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and more. Owners of vehicles requiring an oil meeting the VW 504.00/507.00 specification are actively seeking appropriate products. As one of only a few oils available in North America that meets the VW 504.00/507.00 specification, Dealers are presented with an excellent opportunity to capture increased sales.

See the November AMSOIL Magazine for more information.

Synthetic Lubricants and Extended Drain Intervals Contribute to Decreased Lubricant Consumption

According to Kline and Co., U.S. lubricant consumption decreased by an average annual rate of 9.2 percent between 2006 and 2009, with the decrease attributed to many different market and economic factors, including increased use of synthetic lubricants and the growing practice of extending drain intervals. While the volume of lubricant sales declined, the overall market value remained steady at $5.1 billion, indicating increased sales of more expensive, higher quality lubricants. Demand is expected to rebound by 2.4 percent per year from 2009 to 2014.

Lower Viscosity Oils Gain Market Share

Kline and Co. has revealed recent shifts in motor oil viscosity demand. While the 5W-30 viscosity comprised 51 percent of total U.S. demand in 2009, 5W-20 is quickly gaining ground. “We do see 5W-20 demand rising significantly from where it was in 2006, to just under 20 percent of the total volume,” said Kline Project Manager George Morvey. “This is really due to the Ford factory and service fill, the Honda factory and service fill, and to some extent Toyota. We do see demand for the 10W-30 and 10W-40 shifting and favoring the 5Ws.”

Kline also expects strong growth ahead for 0W oils. “We do see them poised for growth beginning in 2010, as Toyota and Honda shift their factory and service fill requirements away from 5Ws to 0Ws to meet stricter fuel economy regulations,” said Morvey. “That will certainly be something to watch, and certainly offer opportunities for suppliers and installers.”

AMSOIL Reformulates its Line of XL Synthetic Motor Oils

AMSOIL has reformulated its line of Extended Life (XL) Synthetic Motor Oils to provide up to 10,000-mile/six-month drain intervals, or longer when recommended in owners’ manuals or indicated by electronic oil life monitoring systems. Pricing remains unchanged, providing customers with enhanced value.

Featuring extended-drain boost technology, the new formulations boast an extra measure of select additives that neutralize contaminants longer. They continue to provide significant benefits compared to conventional oils, including superior wear control, improved high- and low-temperature protection and increased fuel economy, now throughout a longer drain interval. Reformulated AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are API SN certified and bear the API donut on the label. They are also formulated to meet or exceed the ILSAC GF-5 performance requirements for gasoline engines that took effect October 1. Because GM only grants dexos1™ licenses to SAE 5W-30 products, only AMSOIL XL 5W-30 carries the dexos1 recommendation.

See the October AMSOIL Magazine for more information.

Universal Synthetic Marine Gear Lube Tube Size to Change October 15

Because the tube supplier has discontinued its 13-oz. tube size, AMSOIL Universal Synthetic Marine Gear Lube 13-oz. tubes (AGMTB) will be replaced with 10-oz. tubes effective October 15. Pricing will be adjusted to reflect the smaller tube size:

Note:  The October issue of AMSOIL Magazine states the effective date is October 1; however, a delay from the supplier has pushed the date to October 15.

Severe Gear 75W-110 Canadian Product Code

The Canadian product code for Severe Gear 75W-110 Synthetic Gear Lube quarts (SVTQTC) will change to the U.S. product code (SVTQT) when current inventory is depleted.

Severe Gear Lubes Enhanced

AMSOIL is continually researching methods to enhance its already-superior product line. New additive technology has recently been incorporated into the Severe Gear Synthetic EP Gear Lube line, providing even greater protection and performance. Dealers and customers may notice the fluid color has changed slightly. Pricing remains unchanged. Details will be announced in the November issue of AMSOIL Magazine.

AMSOIL Exposure Huge at 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally took place August 9-15, drawing an estimated 750,000 motorcycle enthusiasts and potential AMSOIL customers to the Black Hills in Sturgis, S.D. for the week-long event. With AMSOIL in its third year as the Official Oil of the world famous rally, the company’s visibility was larger than ever. A large AMSOIL banner once again greeted visitors as they entered town on Junction Avenue, and with 90 AMSOIL signs gracing the many barricades located throughout the downtown area, the AMSOIL logo was impossible to miss.

Thousands of people walked by the AMSOIL booth each day, where AMSOIL corporate staff were busy spreading the word about the many benefits of AMSOIL products. Temperatures reaching over 100°F provided a perfect opportunity to promote the high temperature benefits of AMSOIL synthetic motorcycle oils.

“The response to AMSOIL at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year was nothing short of spectacular,” said Director of Dealer Sales Rob Stenberg. “The visibility of the AMSOIL logo was unsurpassed, and because attendees traveled from all parts of North America to attend, the company’s presence provides a significant benefit to AMSOIL Dealers everywhere.”

Testing Shows 16 Percent of Oils Fail API SM Specification

According to the Institute of Materials (IOM), testing shows that of the 250 off-the-shelf motor oils that claim to meet the API SM specification, 16 percent do not. According to Mary Herrmann, IOM general manager in Midland, Mich., 40 motor oils failed at least one of the specification limits.

"This shows the challenge for API,” said Herrmann. “They also gather samples from the marketplace and do testing, but we're still seeing oils that are off-spec which carry the ILSAC and API marks on the labels.”

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils meet or exceed minimum API SM specifications, and the company’s rigorous quality control program ensures each quart delivers superior protection and performance.

Relabeled AMSOIL Brake Fluids

Because the State of Florida required a change to the labels of AMSOIL Series 500 High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid (BF3) and Series 600 High Performance DOT 4 Brake Fluid (BF4), the products have been temporarily unavailable for purchase in Florida. There are no issues with the performance or safety of these products, and AMSOIL expects relabeled products will arrive at the Orlando Distribution Center within the next week. AMSOIL apologizes for the inconvenience.

Why Can’t Dealers Sell AMSOIL Products on eBay?

Successful Dealers are constantly thinking of ways to increase sales and promote their businesses, and many ask why AMSOIL policy does not allow sale of AMSOIL products on eBay.

The primary reason why online selling and auction sites are prohibited is to prevent pricing wars.

Because Dealers able to purchase large product quantities can obtain discounts and full commissions, they can sell AMSOIL products at discounted prices. AMSOIL does not want Dealers competing with each other for customers based upon price. That’s why the company established the commercial and retail-on-the-shelf pricing and has policies enforcing those minimums, and why it established wholesale prices for Dealers and Preferred Customers. The one area where AMSOIL does not control price is the price at which a Dealer sells directly to his or her personal customers and downline Dealers. When dealing with someone on a one-on-one basis, AMSOIL Dealers are free to set the price (and their mark-up or profit). Because AMSOIL allows Dealers that flexibility of setting the price at which they sell to their customers, and does not want to change that policy, allowing Dealers to sell on eBay and other auction sites would ultimately lead to price wars online, as was witnessed before the policies preventing eBay and auction site sales were implemented.

Placing an auction on eBay or another auction site is akin to a national advertisement that lists price. To avoid the same price war scenario, AMSOIL does not allow Dealers to place prices in any national advertisements. Only retail-on-the-shelf accounts are allowed to place prices in their advertisements, but because they don’t receive discounts or commissions that help reduce their buying costs, they are naturally forced to set prices higher than the wholesale price (usually at suggested retail prices or higher when taking freight into account). AMSOIL also does not allow retail-on-the-shelf accounts to post prices or sell AMSOIL products online.

In order to protect the business opportunity for all Dealers, AMSOIL policy states that the only place AMSOIL customers can buy AMSOIL products online (where pricing is listed) is the AMSOIL online store or electronic Retail Catalog (G100/G300). This prevents price wars, creates a level playing field for all Dealers and helps assure Dealers receive the proper credit for their customers’ purchases.

AMSOIL Dealers still have plenty of opportunity to advertise their Dealerships online. In fact, eBay has a special section called “eBay Classifieds.” Advertising AMSOIL Dealerships at sites such as eBay Classifieds or Craigslist is acceptable. The same rules apply for ads as they do for Dealer Websites (name, title and location must be present, with no pricing shown). AMSOIL INC. recommends reading through any company or website’s terms of use before creating ads or using any online service. AMSOIL INC. is not responsible for violations of third party policies and takes no responsibility for loss or damages resulting from violations of third party policies.

Although Dealers may sometimes come across eBay listings for AMSOIL products, they can be assured that AMSOIL INC. is monitoring the situation daily and working toward removal of AMSOIL items.

Click here to read an explanation of the difficulties in eBay and auction site enforcement situations and what AMSOIL does to ensure pricing wars never affect a Dealer’s business opportunity. For any questions regarding the company’s eBay policy, contact the Internet Business Registrations & Compliance Department at [email protected].

New SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil Completes Premium Line

Many Harleys with older engines and some big-bore bikes require a 60-weight oil. While AMSOIL SAE 60 Super Heavy Weight Synthetic Racing Oil (AHR) provides more than adequate performance in these applications, it is not formulated to address the issues specific to motorcycles. In order to better address these issues, AMSOIL now offers Synthetic SAE 60 High Performance Motorcycle Oil (MCS). AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil is formulated specifically for motorcycles using the same proven technology developed for AMSOIL 10W-30, 10W-40 and 20W-50 motorcycle oils. AMSOIL SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil is multi-functional and delivers premium performance in motorcycle engines and transmissions.

See the August Action News for more information.

Superior Protection for Natural Gas Engines

AMSOIL now offers premium-quality natural gas engine oils for both the stationary and vehicular natural gas engine markets: Synthetic Stationary Natural Gas Engine Oil (ANGS) and Synthetic Vehicular Natural Gas Engine Oil (ANGV). It is important for Dealers to identify which product best meets a customer’s needs.

Stationary natural gas engines incorporate roller cams, while vehicular natural gas engines use flat-tappet cams. Because the flat-tappet/camshaft lobe interface experiences extreme pressures and loads, it requires a properly-formulated natural gas engine oil fortified with anti-wear additives to reduce wear and extend flat-tappet and camshaft life. New AMSOIL Synthetic Vehicular Natural Gas Engine Oil is formulated with higher levels of zinc and phosphorus to help protect the valvetrains in vehicular and mobile applications.

Recommended for stationary natural gas engines, AMSOIL Synthetic Stationary Natural Gas Engine Oil is the same premium-quality formulation as the previous Synthetic Natural Gas Engine Oil (ANG) product, which is discontinued. The name and product code were updated to reduce the chance of misapplication.

Fuel Efficient Vehicles Expected to Help Reduce Energy Demand

According to ExxonMobil, economic activity and population growth will drive up global energy demand by 35 percent between 2005 and 2030. However, significant efficiency gains will cause energy demand in the United States and other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries to decrease slightly by 2030, even though their economies are expected to average 50 percent growth over this time period.

While the most growth in transportation energy demand has traditionally come from the light-duty passenger vehicle segment, increasingly efficient vehicles are expected to flatten demand. In fact, in OECD countries, personal transportation energy demand is expected to drop 25 percent by 2030, while heavy-duty vehicles will compose the largest portion of transportation energy demand. Among the fuel efficient vehicles expected to help contribute to shrinking energy demand are hybrid vehicles, which will represent about 15 percent of the personal vehicle market by 2030, compared to less than one percent today.

Efficiency gains and shifts to lower-carbon fuels are expected to decrease energy-related CO2 emissions in the United States and other OECD countries by about 15 percent, bringing them down to 1980 levels by 2030.

New ALTRUM Website Provides Easy Access to Products and Ordering

The new ALTRUM website officially went live on June 1, and it has received rave reviews.

“People have called to say how delighted they are with it,” said ALTRUM Manager Greg Sawyer. “It’s on par with the AMSOIL and AGGRAND websites for ease-of-use and application.”

The new ALTRUM website offers a crisp, clean look with one-click links for easy navigation to products, the online store and shopping cart, as well as Preferred Customer sign-up to help customers save on each purchase of ALTRUM supplements. In-depth information is available in the new ALTRUM Dealer Zone.

“The site is categorized by group: Multis and Enzymes, Technical Supplements, Superfood Supplements and A.J.’s Signature Formulas, and there’s even an all-encompassing ‘Products A to Z’ link,” said Sawyer. “Product labels are displayed with the products, along with their ingredients and the amount of each nutrient in each of the supplements. It’s all there; Dealers can answer customer questions quickly or direct their customers to the website for complete product information.”

To reach the ALTRUM website, click the ALTRUM icon at the bottom of the AMSOIL or AGGRAND website, or access it directly at http://www.altrumonline.com/.

Why Do Customers Buy?

When it comes to potential and current customers, would you rather know how to sell to them, or why they buy? Knowing why customers buy is a much more powerful piece of information.

Well-known sales trainer Jeffery Gitomer trademarked the phrase, “People don’t like to be sold but they love to buy.” No truer words have been spoken. Gitomer offers advice that can benefit all AMSOIL Dealers.

In order to be successful, it is important to understand the buying motives of customers. Salespeople can learn all the “closing techniques” they want, but if they haven’t uncovered the motives of the buyer, they have little chance of making the sale. A Dealer’s job is to find the customer’s buying motives and then satisfy those motives with AMSOIL products and good service. Something else Gitomer said is very important to remember: “People buy for their reasons, not for your reasons.” The focus has to be on the customer and his or her needs and motives; not yours. As Gitomer says, “Your reasons for selling are worthless if they don’t match the customer’s reason for buying.”

Additionally, it is important for Dealers to eliminate the element of risk for customers. If they perceive doing business with you as a risk, they will not buy. The AMSOIL Dealer Sales Department has spoken with many Dealers over the years about how their customers perceive the use of AMSOIL products to be a risk, especially with respect to extended drain intervals. The Dealer’s job is to eliminate this risk.

Study more on buying motives. While uncovering the buying motives of customers is hard work, it eliminates the salespeople who are not motivated enough to do the work. Ask customers why they buy from you. If there is a pattern, take note of it. Ask former customers or potential customers who have turned you down why they no longer or won’t purchase from you. If there is a pattern, be sure to change that behavior. Become a student of buying motives, and you will increase sales. “Find the motive and find the money,” says Gitomer. “Show me the motive and I will show you the sale!”

AMSOIL Price Adjustment

The rapidly increasing costs of lubricant base stocks and additives have been well-documented over the past few months. Although virtually all lubricant manufacturers implemented price increases in January and February, AMSOIL held off. More recently, lubricant manufacturers have implemented 6 to 10 percent price increases on finished products effective June and July. AMSOIL makes every effort to maintain the lowest prices possible and has delayed raising prices for as long as possible. Due to the ever-increasing costs of raw materials, however, AMSOIL is forced to implement a 3 to 6 percent price adjustment in the U.S. effective August 1. Due to fluctuations in the exchange rate, Canadian prices will remain unchanged at this time. Even with a minimal price adjustment, AMSOIL synthetic lubricants remain the best and most cost-effective choice on the market, saving customers money through extended drain intervals, reduced wear and maintenance and increased fuel efficiency.

Updated pricing information will be available no later than July 1 and can be accessed in the Product Pricing Interface in the Dealer Zone at www.amsoil.com. For pricing effective August 1, select Future Pricing. Pricing files are available in either EXCEL or PDF formats.

Retail and commercial accounts will be notified of the impending price change through both an e-mail and the July Service Line. Servicing Dealers are also encouraged to inform their customers of the price change.

In order to facilitate communications like this from AMSOIL and allow access to important information such as pricing, ordering and product news, AMSOIL encourages Dealers to help their personally-sponsored Dealers, PCs and accounts register for their appropriate account zones. To do so, AMSOIL must have an accurate e-mail address in the Dealer, PC or account’s membership profile. To provide AMSOIL with an e-mail address or to update an e-mail address, use the “Forgot Password” link in the Account Zone area at www.amsoil.com and follow the instructions at the bottom of the window.

New Dominator® Coolant Boost Provides Effective Heat Transfer and Enhanced Corrosion Protection

Racers demand lower engine operating temperatures in order to achieve maximum efficiency and horsepower on the track, while the straight water coolant used by many racers opens engines up to damaging radiator and water pump corrosion. New AMSOIL Dominator® Coolant Boost (RDCB) provides racers and motorists with significantly lower engine operating temperatures, quicker engine warm-up times and advanced corrosion protection.

Aging Vehicles Present Opportunity

According to research firm R.L. Polk and Co., the average vehicle age has increased steadily in recent years, increasing 15 percent over the last 10 years and 21 percent over the last 15 years. Brian Funke, R.L. Polk director of sales and client services, believes the aging vehicle population presents increased sales opportunities for the lubricant market. “Obviously for the oil lube market [this] is a great trend because the out-of-warranty period is longer, and people are wanting to service their vehicle a little bit longer because they are holding onto them longer,” said Funke. Polk research reveals motorists are also keeping their vehicles 56 percent longer than they were in 2001. “They were at 28 months on average in 2001 and are at 44 months now,” said Funke. “When people are holding onto their used vehicle that much longer, they’re going to be servicing their car better and more frequently.”

Polk also reported on recent shifts in recommended motor oil viscosities. The number of vehicles calling for a 5W-20 motor oil is up more than 7 percent since 2008, while the number of vehicles recommending 10W-30 is down 6 percent and the number of vehicles recommending 5W-30 is down 1.6 percent.

Vehicle Inspections Reveal Motorists Falling Behind on Fluid Maintenance

Vehicle inspections conducted for the Aftermarket Automotive Industry Association’s National Car Care Month revealed a significant number of motorists falling behind on fluid maintenance, including motor oils, coolants, transmission fluids and brake fluids. Almost three out of 10 vehicles (27 percent) had low, overfull or dirty motor oil, 26 percent had low, leaky or dirty coolant and 21 percent had low, overfull or burnt transmission fluid. Inspections also revealed 17 percent had problems with their washer fluid and power steering fluid and about 13 percent had problems with their brake fluid.

ISO 9001:2008 Certification

AMSOIL INC. is certified to the ISO 9001:2008 standard requirements. Dealers may promote the company’s ISO 9001:2008 certification on their websites but must indicate clearly that AMSOIL INC., not the independent Dealership, is the certified entity. Dealers are advised also to update their certification listing from 9001:2000 to 9001:2008.

Protecting Your AMSOIL Business From Scams

It’s a fact of business that active AMSOIL Dealers are engaged in distributing their contact information. Dealers want to reach as many people as possible through methods including business cards, catalogs, telephone directories, text messaging, and through email and websites on the Internet. And while all of this is a necessary and vital function to grow your business, it also exposes your contact information to those individuals who may be involved in scams.

To read the full Protecting Your AMSOIL Business From Scams article, view samples of known scams that target AMSOIL Dealers or to report a possible Internet scam, click the Ask AMSOIL link on the Dealer Zone Menu, then click the Internet Scams link located under the “Website & Internet” section.

AMSOIL Redesigns the Dealer Locator

AMSOIL recently launched a new version of the Dealer Locator on the corporate website that provides a series of improvements over the previous system. For example, under the previous system, not all the qualified Dealers registered within the Zip/Postal code radius were listed in the search results. With the new and improved Dealer Locator, a red marker represents every qualified Dealer within 25 miles of the specified Zip/Postal code or city and state.

See the June Action News for more information.

Increased Fuel Efficiency with By-Pass Filtration

By-pass oil filtration introduces a high-capacity secondary filter to an engine’s lubrication cycle that is designed to eliminate nearly all contaminants in the oil. Though widely known that ultra-fine by-pass filtration reduces engine wear and extends drain intervals, few know that its continued use can also increase engine efficiency.

See the June Action News for more information.

AMSOIL Re-Designing Affected Filters

As previously announced, a small number of customers with vehicles from Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus and Pontiac (with Toyota-built engines) have reported that their vehicles’ oil pressure light has illuminated prior to reaching the end of the AMSOIL-recommended 25,000-mile drain interval (see announcement). These issues have been limited to a few smaller Ea Oil Filters (EaO13, EaO09, EaO10 and EaO57) and do not apply to the entire Ea Oil Filter line. The smaller filters can potentially fill with contaminants rapidly and limit the oil supply to the engine. Although these issues have only been reported in a few extreme cases, AMSOIL has taken steps to limit use of the affected filters on vehicles where these problems have occurred. AMSOIL is currently re-engineering the affected filters and replacements will be available as soon as possible. In the meantime, AMSOIL offers both WIX and MANN oil filters for the affected applications. If a WIX or MANN oil filter is used, AMSOIL recommends changing it at the OEM-recommended interval or 7,500 miles, whichever is longer, when using AMSOIL synthetic motor oil*. Check the AMSOIL Online Product Application Guide for the most up-to-date application information.

*Note: In gasoline-fueled vehicles, AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are recommended for 7,500-mile/six month oil change intervals, or longer where stated by vehicle manufacturers or indicated by electronic oil life monitoring systems. Change aftermarket, OEM or AMSOIL Ea Oil Filter at every oil change.

Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (TBI) Discontinued, New Bio Oil Available Soon

AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (TBI) is out of stock and discontinued effective immediately. The product will soon be replaced with a new formulation.

New AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil is a blend of high oleic oils, synthetic esters and ashless additives that meets the U.S. Federal bio-based procurement guidelines as defined in section 9002 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002. It can be used in any mobile or stationary application requiring an ISO VG 46 fluid where leakage or spillage would present an environmental hazard. Applications include construction, logging, farming, lawn and turf care or any environmentally-sensitive task where biodegradability and low aquatic toxicity is desired.

New AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil meets the Vickers M2950-S and I-286-S standards, is hydrolytically stable and oxidation resistant. It provides excellent rust and corrosion protection, and a 12-stage FZG rating demonstrates its ability to protect gears and bearings against wear.

New AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil is compatible with TBI and most synthetic and petroleum-based hydraulic fluids. Optimum results will be obtained by draining the previous fluid and refilling with new AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil. Excessive contamination by other fluids will adversely impact its biodegradability and aquatic toxicity performance.

New AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil will be available in 5, 55 and 275-gallon package sizes. There are currently no plans to introduce other viscosities to the biodegradable hydraulic fluid line, but this decision will be continuously reevaluated. Further details on the new AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil, including the new product code, will be announced soon.

Strong Growth Forecast for Synthetics

A new study from the Freedonia Group forecasts strong growth for synthetic lubricants in the coming years, with demand for synthetic engine oils rising 7.3 percent per year to 2013.

“Engine oils and hydraulic and transmission fluids will experience the fastest gains as synthetics finally begin to penetrate the conservative medium and heavy duty truck market, and as increasing new vehicle lubricant performance requirements and growing consumer acceptance further expand synthetics’ share of the light vehicle market,” stated the research firm.

EaO13 Change Intervals

A small number of customers with 2001-2010 Honda and 2002-2010 Acura vehicles have reported their vehicles’ oil pressure lights have illuminated prior to reaching the end of the AMSOIL-recommended 25,000-mile change interval.

To protect the engine, the OEM engineered the oil pressure sensor to trigger the oil light when there is insufficient oil pressure to maintain an adequate level of protection. Each filter is equipped with a by-pass valve, so when the filter is at or close to capacity, the engine is continually supplied with adequate lubrication oil, although unfiltered. However, if the filter reaches maximum capacity, the level of restriction can become significant enough to trigger the oil pressure warning light. In extreme situations, oil starvation can occur. Premature oil filter capacity can be attributed to a number of factors such as poor air filtration, a leaking air intake system or excessive contaminants being produced in the combustion process.

AMSOIL recommends changing the EaO13 Oil Filter according to OEM-recommended intervals in the following applications:

• 2001-2010 Honda
• 2002-2010 Acura
• 1992-2006 Chrysler imports
• 1993-1997 Ford Probe
• 1996-2010 Nissan/Infiniti
• 1971-2000 Mazda
• 1999-2000 Mercury Villager
• 1990-2010 Mitsubishi
• 2004-2007 Saturn

Upon request, the following options are available for customers who have purchased EaO13 filters:

1) AMSOIL will provide one WIX filter and one quart of top-off oil at no charge.
2) New EaO13 filters in inventory may be exchanged for two WIX filters.
3) For customers who do not want replacement filters, refund or Dealer account credit requests will be honored.

These options are handled through the Technical Services department.

For more information, see the AMSOIL EaO13 Oil Filter Technical Service Bulletin located in the Technical Service Bulletins section of the Dealer Zone, or contact AMSOIL Technical Services at (715) 399-8324 or [email protected].

AMSOIL Modifies T-1 Leads Qualifications

Last December, AMSOIL implemented a revised T-1 Certification Program aimed at improving conversion of leads to buying customers. The revised T-1 Program has enabled the company to more efficiently and effectively respond to prospects, while increasing the opportunity for Dealers to convert them into customers. It has also generated a lot of Dealer feedback concerning the new qualification standards.

After analyzing the numbers, AMSOIL decided to revise the qualification standards for remaining eligible for the Leads Program and Dealer Locator. These new qualification requirements take effect on June 1, 2010, when the current six-month grace period for all T-1 Dealers expires:

New Qualification Standards
A Dealer must earn commissions of at least $10 in the last six months and meet one of the following requirements:

• Have at least one new, personally-sponsored customer (Dealer, PC, RA, CA) in the last six months.
• Have at least five current, personally-sponsored customers (active Dealer/PC, protected CA/RA).

When a Dealer becomes T-1 Certified, he or she earns the right to participate in the many AMSOIL co-op programs. The next step is to register Dealers, Preferred Customers, retail or commercial accounts and generate a minimum of $10 in commissions. Once accomplished, the T-1 Dealer earns the right to participate in the Dealer Locator and Leads Program. While the qualifying requirements have been relaxed, they still require a Dealer to demonstrate the ability to register a new customer, earn commissions and service customers.

The lead follow-up requirements for Dealers who receive T-1 issued leads remain unchanged. When a T-1 lead shows up in a Dealer’s Message Center, he or she has two days to accept or reject it. The Dealer then has seven days to log into the Dealer Zone and complete the follow-up section for the lead. Failing to respond to three T-1 leads in a row, or failing to provide follow-up confirmation for three T-1 leads in a row, results in that Dealer being removed from the program.

One of the goals of the new T-1 Certification Program is to ensure that only Dealers serious about providing timely lead follow-up be allowed to participate. This goal will help improve the image of AMSOIL and the Dealer network and translate into more prospects being contacted and converted into customers.
