AMSOIL Exposure Huge at 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally took place August 9-15, drawing an estimated 750,000 motorcycle enthusiasts and potential AMSOIL customers to the Black Hills in Sturgis, S.D. for the week-long event. With AMSOIL in its third year as the Official Oil of the world famous rally, the company’s visibility was larger than ever. A large AMSOIL banner once again greeted visitors as they entered town on Junction Avenue, and with 90 AMSOIL signs gracing the many barricades located throughout the downtown area, the AMSOIL logo was impossible to miss.

Thousands of people walked by the AMSOIL booth each day, where AMSOIL corporate staff were busy spreading the word about the many benefits of AMSOIL products. Temperatures reaching over 100°F provided a perfect opportunity to promote the high temperature benefits of AMSOIL synthetic motorcycle oils.

“The response to AMSOIL at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year was nothing short of spectacular,” said Director of Dealer Sales Rob Stenberg. “The visibility of the AMSOIL logo was unsurpassed, and because attendees traveled from all parts of North America to attend, the company’s presence provides a significant benefit to AMSOIL Dealers everywhere.”

Testing Shows 16 Percent of Oils Fail API SM Specification

According to the Institute of Materials (IOM), testing shows that of the 250 off-the-shelf motor oils that claim to meet the API SM specification, 16 percent do not. According to Mary Herrmann, IOM general manager in Midland, Mich., 40 motor oils failed at least one of the specification limits.

"This shows the challenge for API,” said Herrmann. “They also gather samples from the marketplace and do testing, but we're still seeing oils that are off-spec which carry the ILSAC and API marks on the labels.”

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils meet or exceed minimum API SM specifications, and the company’s rigorous quality control program ensures each quart delivers superior protection and performance.

Relabeled AMSOIL Brake Fluids

Because the State of Florida required a change to the labels of AMSOIL Series 500 High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid (BF3) and Series 600 High Performance DOT 4 Brake Fluid (BF4), the products have been temporarily unavailable for purchase in Florida. There are no issues with the performance or safety of these products, and AMSOIL expects relabeled products will arrive at the Orlando Distribution Center within the next week. AMSOIL apologizes for the inconvenience.

Why Can’t Dealers Sell AMSOIL Products on eBay?

Successful Dealers are constantly thinking of ways to increase sales and promote their businesses, and many ask why AMSOIL policy does not allow sale of AMSOIL products on eBay.

The primary reason why online selling and auction sites are prohibited is to prevent pricing wars.

Because Dealers able to purchase large product quantities can obtain discounts and full commissions, they can sell AMSOIL products at discounted prices. AMSOIL does not want Dealers competing with each other for customers based upon price. That’s why the company established the commercial and retail-on-the-shelf pricing and has policies enforcing those minimums, and why it established wholesale prices for Dealers and Preferred Customers. The one area where AMSOIL does not control price is the price at which a Dealer sells directly to his or her personal customers and downline Dealers. When dealing with someone on a one-on-one basis, AMSOIL Dealers are free to set the price (and their mark-up or profit). Because AMSOIL allows Dealers that flexibility of setting the price at which they sell to their customers, and does not want to change that policy, allowing Dealers to sell on eBay and other auction sites would ultimately lead to price wars online, as was witnessed before the policies preventing eBay and auction site sales were implemented.

Placing an auction on eBay or another auction site is akin to a national advertisement that lists price. To avoid the same price war scenario, AMSOIL does not allow Dealers to place prices in any national advertisements. Only retail-on-the-shelf accounts are allowed to place prices in their advertisements, but because they don’t receive discounts or commissions that help reduce their buying costs, they are naturally forced to set prices higher than the wholesale price (usually at suggested retail prices or higher when taking freight into account). AMSOIL also does not allow retail-on-the-shelf accounts to post prices or sell AMSOIL products online.

In order to protect the business opportunity for all Dealers, AMSOIL policy states that the only place AMSOIL customers can buy AMSOIL products online (where pricing is listed) is the AMSOIL online store or electronic Retail Catalog (G100/G300). This prevents price wars, creates a level playing field for all Dealers and helps assure Dealers receive the proper credit for their customers’ purchases.

AMSOIL Dealers still have plenty of opportunity to advertise their Dealerships online. In fact, eBay has a special section called “eBay Classifieds.” Advertising AMSOIL Dealerships at sites such as eBay Classifieds or Craigslist is acceptable. The same rules apply for ads as they do for Dealer Websites (name, title and location must be present, with no pricing shown). AMSOIL INC. recommends reading through any company or website’s terms of use before creating ads or using any online service. AMSOIL INC. is not responsible for violations of third party policies and takes no responsibility for loss or damages resulting from violations of third party policies.

Although Dealers may sometimes come across eBay listings for AMSOIL products, they can be assured that AMSOIL INC. is monitoring the situation daily and working toward removal of AMSOIL items.

New SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil Completes Premium Line

Many Harleys with older engines and some big-bore bikes require a 60-weight oil. While AMSOIL SAE 60 Super Heavy Weight Synthetic Racing Oil (AHR) provides more than adequate performance in these applications, it is not formulated to address the issues specific to motorcycles. In order to better address these issues, AMSOIL now offers Synthetic SAE 60 High Performance Motorcycle Oil (MCS). AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil is formulated specifically for motorcycles using the same proven technology developed for AMSOIL 10W-30, 10W-40 and 20W-50 motorcycle oils. AMSOIL SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil is multi-functional and delivers premium performance in motorcycle engines and transmissions.

Superior Protection for Natural Gas Engines

AMSOIL now offers premium-quality natural gas engine oils for both the stationary and vehicular natural gas engine markets: Synthetic Stationary Natural Gas Engine Oil (ANGS) and Synthetic Vehicular Natural Gas Engine Oil (ANGV). It is important for Dealers to identify which product best meets a customer’s needs.

Stationary natural gas engines incorporate roller cams, while vehicular natural gas engines use flat-tappet cams. Because the flat-tappet/camshaft lobe interface experiences extreme pressures and loads, it requires a properly-formulated natural gas engine oil fortified with anti-wear additives to reduce wear and extend flat-tappet and camshaft life. New AMSOIL Synthetic Vehicular Natural Gas Engine Oil is formulated with higher levels of zinc and phosphorus to help protect the valvetrains in vehicular and mobile applications.

Recommended for stationary natural gas engines, AMSOIL Synthetic Stationary Natural Gas Engine Oil is the same premium-quality formulation as the previous Synthetic Natural Gas Engine Oil (ANG) product, which is discontinued. The name and product code were updated to reduce the chance of misapplication.

Fuel Efficient Vehicles Expected to Help Reduce Energy Demand

According to ExxonMobil, economic activity and population growth will drive up global energy demand by 35 percent between 2005 and 2030. However, significant efficiency gains will cause energy demand in the United States and other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries to decrease slightly by 2030, even though their economies are expected to average 50 percent growth over this time period.

While the most growth in transportation energy demand has traditionally come from the light-duty passenger vehicle segment, increasingly efficient vehicles are expected to flatten demand. In fact, in OECD countries, personal transportation energy demand is expected to drop 25 percent by 2030, while heavy-duty vehicles will compose the largest portion of transportation energy demand. Among the fuel efficient vehicles expected to help contribute to shrinking energy demand are hybrid vehicles, which will represent about 15 percent of the personal vehicle market by 2030, compared to less than one percent today.

Efficiency gains and shifts to lower-carbon fuels are expected to decrease energy-related CO2 emissions in the United States and other OECD countries by about 15 percent, bringing them down to 1980 levels by 2030.
