AMSOIL Quickshot™ SE Awarded Best New Powersports Product by SEMA Judges

Each fall, over 100,000 automotive specialty products industry leaders from more than 100 countries gather at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show to showcase and demonstrate products, attend seminars and special events and take advantage of networking opportunities. Held November 2-5 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the 2010 show boasted more attendees, booths, new product introductions and vehicles than ever. Representing AMSOIL was Director of Advertising Ed Newman.

The first day of the show opened with the New Products Awards Breakfast. Over 2,000 new products were submitted for consideration of this distinctive honor in 15 different categories, and judges were looking for superiority of innovation, technical achievement, quality, consumer appeal and marketability in their search for the winners. With Dave McClelland of Hot Rod TV and the Voice of SEMA leading the awards program, AMSOIL Quickshot SE (AQS) was announced as the winner of the Best New Powersports Product Award.

Dominator® Coolant Boost Reduces Engine Warm-Up Times in Cold Weather

AMSOIL Dominator® Coolant Boost is designed to reduce corrosion and significantly enhance heat transfer in cooling systems. One of the overlooked benefits of better heat transfer is much quicker engine warm-up in winter conditions, which is noticed when the vehicle’s defroster works much sooner.

To understand how Dominator Coolant Boost reduces engine warm-up times in cold weather, it is imperative to understand the fundamentals of an engine’s cooling system and how Coolant Boost’s proprietary tiered surfactant technology works. The same tiered surfactant technology that aids in reducing engine operating temperatures also decreases engine warm-up times.

In a vehicle’s cooling system, the ultimate goal is to quickly and effectively move heat away from engine components, permitting the engine to run at a safe, controlled temperature. An effective cooling system reduces stress on all aspects of the engine, including the lubricating oil. Alternatively, a corroded cooling system that transfers heat ineffectively will eventually lead to engine overheating, breakdown of engine oil and catastrophic failure.

Before covering tiered surfactants, it is important to understand what a surfactant does in a cooling system. A surfactant reduces the surface tension of water and antifreeze, allowing closer contact with metal parts. This closer contact increases the coolant’s efficiency in transferring heat away from hot engine parts and out through the radiator and fan.

Many leading coolant additives contain only one surfactant, limiting the temperature range and ultimate effectiveness. AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Boost utilizes three surfactants, each designed to operate in a different temperature range to increase liquid-to-metal contact from startup to operating temperature.

The graphic below illustrates how each surfactant in Coolant Boost’s tiered surfactant technology is designed to provide optimal performance over a wide temperature range, while competing products with only one surfactant are limited to performance in a single temperature range.

The table below outlines controlled testing of AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Boost with a 50/50 antifreeze/water mix.  When a cooling system reaches 120°F, the operator typically feels warm air coming out of the defroster.  The time it takes to reach this temperature with Coolant Boost is reduced by 45 percent compared to the 50/50 antifreeze/water mix alone.


Through the use of tiered surfactants, AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Boost delivers quicker warm-up times in the winter and engine temperature reductions in the summer, making it an excellent choice for year round use.

Stock Code Changes for Retail Catalog, New Free Label Program

Effective December 1, in order to increase efficiency and reduce back orders, AMSOIL Retail Catalogs (G100 U.S., G300 Canada, G100S Spanish) will use the unit of measure system to indicate quantities, and the previous G100A-F, G300A-F and G100SA stock codes will be obsolete.


Dealers who order 900 or more catalogs using product code G100-PK receive free catalog labels from the AMSOIL Print Center. The free label promotion is only valid when catalogs are ordered in groups of 300 using product code G100-PK. For example, a Dealer who orders four G100-PK (1,200 catalogs) will receive 1,200 free labels; however, a Dealer who orders three G100-PK and one G100-CA (1,000 catalogs) will only receive 900 free labels.

How It Works
A Dealer who places a qualifying order receives a promotional code in his or her Message Center inbox. To redeem the promotional code, go to the Print Center, choose the Catalog Upgrade Labels, submit the information to be printed on the labels and enter the promotional code at checkout. Because the code must be manually activated in the Print Center, Dealers must wait one business day before attempting to redeem the code. Promotional codes expire 60 days from date of purchase.

Cold Temperature Storage Recommendations

Because cold temperature storage can be detrimental to the performance of some AMSOIL products, AMSOIL offers the following storage recommendations:

Lubricants: Store at temperatures at least 10°F above the lubricant’s pour point.

Greases: Store in a dry environment at temperatures at least 10°F above the grease’s lowest operating temperature.

Gasoline Additives, Engine and Transmission Flush: No adverse issues with cold temperature storage.

Diesel Concentrate, Cetane Boost, Diesel Recovery: No adverse issues with cold temperature storage.

Diesel Cold Flow Improver, Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver: Store at temperatures above 0°F.

Brake Fluids: Do not store at temperatures below -40°F for longer than two weeks.

Heavy Duty Metal Protector, Metal Protector, Power Foam, Multi-Purpose Spray Grease, Fogging Oil, Silicone Spray: No adverse issues with cold temperature storage as long as products are allowed to warm to room temperature before use.

Miracle Wash®: Will freeze below 32°F. Can be thawed for use.

Mothers products®: Store at temperatures above freezing.

Antifreeze and Engine Coolant: Will not freeze. No adverse issues with cold temperature storage.

Coolant Boost: Store above 32°F.

Slip Lock®: No adverse issues with cold temperature storage. If product separates, heat to room temperature and shake well before use.

Priced competitively with other standard-drain synthetic motor oils, OE Synthetic Motor Oils offer the protection and performance benefits of a high-quality synthetic for OEM-recommended drain intervals, providing Dealers with a huge opportunity to reach new customers.

Synthetic Lubricants and Extended Drain Intervals Contribute to Decreased Lubricant Consumption

According to Kline and Co., U.S. lubricant consumption decreased by an average annual rate of 9.2 percent between 2006 and 2009, with the decrease attributed to many different market and economic factors, including increased use of synthetic lubricants and the growing practice of extending drain intervals. While the volume of lubricant sales declined, the overall market value remained steady at $5.1 billion, indicating increased sales of more expensive, higher quality lubricants. Demand is expected to rebound by 2.4 percent per year from 2009 to 2014.

Lower Viscosity Oils Gain Market Share

Kline and Co. has revealed recent shifts in motor oil viscosity demand. While the 5W-30 viscosity comprised 51 percent of total U.S. demand in 2009, 5W-20 is quickly gaining ground. “We do see 5W-20 demand rising significantly from where it was in 2006, to just under 20 percent of the total volume,” said Kline Project Manager George Morvey. “This is really due to the Ford factory and service fill, the Honda factory and service fill, and to some extent Toyota. We do see demand for the 10W-30 and 10W-40 shifting and favoring the 5Ws.”

Kline also expects strong growth ahead for 0W oils. “We do see them poised for growth beginning in 2010, as Toyota and Honda shift their factory and service fill requirements away from 5Ws to 0Ws to meet stricter fuel economy regulations,” said Morvey. “That will certainly be something to watch, and certainly offer opportunities for suppliers and installers.”
