Synthetic Lubricant Demand Continues Growing

According to Kline & Co., synthetic lubricant global market share is expected to climb from 13 percent in 2013 to 15 percent in 2017 and 18 percent in 2023. Singling out the consumer automotive lubricants market, synthetics are expected to account for 33 percent of global demand in 2023, up from 26 percent in 2013.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are fueling the increased demand for synthetics. “These volume OEMs really move the needle in terms of synthetic penetration, and we expect that to continue as more and more of these types of OEMs convert either fully to synthetic or partially depending on their engine platforms,” said George Morvey, industry manager for Kline’s energy practice. “Certainly we are seeing longer oil drain intervals, and more vehicles equipped with oil life monitoring systems. In some cases, if you follow the system, the car might need an oil change once a year. With some German imports, that could be 14, 15, 16 months before getting an oil change. Those OEM factors are pushing the extended oil drain intervals and in turn creating demand for synthetics."

As the market continues to shift from do-it-yourself (DIY) to do-it-for-me (DIFM), mechanics and technicians play a key role in influencing customers’ lubricant decisions. “Vehicle owners look to those folks who are the expert to make the brand and product selection, and [a] lot of them are doing that over an OEM-approved brand list,” said Morvey. “A lot of the promotional activity we see in certain country markets is really directed to that decision-maker as opposed to the vehicle owner.”

U.S. Vehicle Population Grows

According to a recent IHS Automotive study, the average vehicle age in the United States is 11.4 years, while vehicle scrap rates are down and new vehicle registrations are up. In fact, there are 3.7 million (1.5 percent) more vehicles on the road since July 2013, representing the largest increase since 2005, and new vehicle registrations surpassed the vehicle scrappage rate by 24 percent over the 12-month study.

“IHS Automotive forecasts that the volume of vehicles zero to five years old will increase by 32 percent over the next five years while vehicles in the 6- to 11-year-old category will decline by 21 percent,” said Mark Seng, IHS Automotive director of aftermarket solutions. “Because of improved quality and consumers holding their cars and light trucks longer, vehicles 12-plus years old continue to grow and will increase by 15 percent by 2019.”

AMSOIL Metal Display Shelf (G3215) Inventory Expected September 1

The arrival of the new AMSOIL Metal Display Shelf (G3215) inventory has been delayed. The Display Shelf is expected to be available again by September 1. Dealers who qualify for the Merchandising Display Co-op Program in the meantime can either purchase discounted AMSOIL Point-of-Purchase Bottle Displays (G3264, G3265, G3266 [availability varies by distribution center]) or wait until the AMSOIL Metal Display Shelf is back in stock. Dealers will still be eligible to receive the display co-op on qualifying retail-account orders during the out-of-stock period. AMSOIL will notify Dealers in the Dealer Zone when the new shipment of shelves is available for purchase.

Discontinued OAI Sample Kits

Oil Analyzers Inc. (OAI) sample kits sold prior to 2008 and addressed to Cleveland, Ohio are no longer being delivered to the laboratory. The lab moved to a different location in Cleveland after being purchased by a new owner, and the delivery contracts with UPS and the U.S. Postal Service have expired.

Although the vast majority of sample kits sold prior to 2008 have already been used, some unused kits may still be in circulation. If you have any kits with the Cleveland shipping address, they will not be delivered to the lab and should be discarded. These kits will not be replaced.

If you sent a sample to the lab at the Cleveland address and have not received results, you may contact Customer Service at 800-726-5400 to determine if the sample was received.

Maximize Sales by Updating Your Retail & Auto Service Center Accounts’ Online Locator Information

AMSOIL introduced the updated Online Locator in May to help Dealers increase retail sales, add new customers and improve customer service. In addition to helping users find an independent AMSOIL Dealer near them, the Online Locator helps them find retail businesses and auto service centers in their area that offer AMSOIL products and services. Each account has its own web page within the Online Locator that displays hours of operation, driving directions and the AMSOIL products the business sells. This information helps customers quickly find what they’re looking for, encouraging them to buy from your retail accounts and boosting your sales. It’s also an excellent tool Dealers can show prospective retail accounts as an added benefit to selling AMSOIL products.

As 50 percent of consumers research product and location information online before purchasing products or services, it is imperative this information is updated for each AMSOIL retail account. To ensure your accounts appear on the Locator, please take a few minutes to ensure your accounts’ information is up-to-date and complete. Customers and prospects who encounter incomplete or missing information are more likely to shop elsewhere, meaning lost sales for you and your retail account. Completing your accounts’ web pages is simple and takes only a few minutes. Follow the instructions below to get started.

1. Navigate to My Business > Retail Account Information Administration.

2. Read the PDF instructions on how to complete the profile builder page.

3. Verify the information on file for each of your accounts is accurate. Accounts with multiple locations require a separate page for each location.

AMSOIL Partners with MMI

AMSOIL has entered a partnership with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to become the official oil of its motorcycle and marine divisions, the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) and Marine Mechanics Institute (MMI). MMI is dedicated to providing its students with the technical education and skills required to diagnose, service and repair motorcycles or marine equipment and launch successful careers in the motorcycle or marine service industries, and it boasts alliances with the top manufacturers in each industry. MMI has campuses in Phoenix and Orlando. The Orlando campus also includes the marine-focused Marine Mechanics Institute.

As the Official Oil of MMI, AMSOIL gains four AMSOIL-branded classrooms (two at MMI Phoenix, one at MMI Orlando [Motorcycle], one at MMI Orlando [Marine]) and assumes an active role in the lubrication and chemical curriculum training. While most of the current training in the Core lubrication courses was developed by original equipment manufacturers, AMSOIL is working with the MMI curriculum team to enhance the training content and speaking points with information regarding the differences between conventional and synthetic lubricants, oil analysis and AMSOIL product information and imagery. Students will hear the AMSOIL story while learning about its state-of-the-industry products. AMSOIL corporate staff will also lead MMI instructor training programs and participate in MMI’s annual Partner Advisory Council, providing feedback on the school’s curriculum, staff, students, training aides and training environment.

Updated Field Study Offers Additional Proof of Severe-Service Performance

In April 2013, AMSOIL published the first edition of the Las Vegas Taxi Cab Field Study (G3118), which demonstrated the excellent performance of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in severe-service Las Vegas taxi cabs. Analysis of a Dodge Charger’s engine and transmission demonstrated virtually no wear, deposits or sludge despite accumulating 7,033 hours (102,582 miles).

The field study has been updated to include new transmission results from another Dodge Charger taxi cab that accumulated 12,891 hours (183,705 miles) on a single transmission fluid change. The second edition of the Las Vegas Taxi Cab Field Study includes the updated transmission results along with the original engine results.

Formula 4-Stroke® Marine is Now FC-W Catalyst Compatible

To help reduce emissions, some four-stroke marine engines are now equipped with exhaust aftertreatment devices. To stay on top of this latest technology, AMSOIL recently upgraded the Formula 4-Stroke Marine Synthetic Motor Oil (WCT, WCF) formulation to make it catalyst compatible. Its packaging now includes the new FC-W Catalyst Compatible logo and corresponding certification number (FC-00358P [WCT], FC-00357P [WCF]). The formulation is backward-compatible, continuing to provide outstanding protection where FC-W oils are recommended. Formula 4-Stroke Marine Oil now also meets API SM qualifications. Its pricing remains unchanged.

Outboard 100:1 Pre-Mix Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil Repackaged

To eliminate confusion with SABER® Professional Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil (ATP), Saber Outboard’s name has been changed to Outboard 100:1 Pre-Mix Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil (ATO), and it has received fresh new packaging. Its formulation and pricing remain unchanged.

Canada Tax Change

Effective July 1, all sales aids (G-items) will be charged tax. AMSOIL is registered in Canada as a direct seller under an Alternative Collection Method. To be in compliance with this agreement, AMSOIL must charge GST/HST on all sales aids or document any Dealers who are exempt. Only home-based Dealers who do not solicit or sell from a fixed place of business can be exempt. If you are a Dealer working out of your home, you will have to fill out the appropriate information on the Sales Tax Adjustment Form (G20) for each order with sales aids to receive a credit back on the tax. All other Dealers will have to pay GST/HST on sales aids and claim an input tax credit on their Canada Revenue GST/HST return.
