A study performed by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) reveals that used motor oil is recycled by 95 percent of auto repair shops and auto parts stores that accept used oil. Repair shops and do-it-yourselfers produce an estimated 1.3 billion gallons of used oil each year, with the majority of it re-used as combustible fuel or re-refined into new oil. Improper disposal of used oil can contaminate drinking water, and 40 percent of oil pollution in the nation’s harbors and waterways can be attributed to improper disposal of used motor oil.
