Strong Growth Forecast for Synthetics

A new study from the Freedonia Group forecasts strong growth for synthetic lubricants in the coming years, with demand for synthetic engine oils rising 7.3 percent per year to 2013.

“Engine oils and hydraulic and transmission fluids will experience the fastest gains as synthetics finally begin to penetrate the conservative medium and heavy duty truck market, and as increasing new vehicle lubricant performance requirements and growing consumer acceptance further expand synthetics’ share of the light vehicle market,” stated the research firm.

EaO13 Change Intervals

A small number of customers with 2001-2010 Honda and 2002-2010 Acura vehicles have reported their vehicles’ oil pressure lights have illuminated prior to reaching the end of the AMSOIL-recommended 25,000-mile change interval.

To protect the engine, the OEM engineered the oil pressure sensor to trigger the oil light when there is insufficient oil pressure to maintain an adequate level of protection. Each filter is equipped with a by-pass valve, so when the filter is at or close to capacity, the engine is continually supplied with adequate lubrication oil, although unfiltered. However, if the filter reaches maximum capacity, the level of restriction can become significant enough to trigger the oil pressure warning light. In extreme situations, oil starvation can occur. Premature oil filter capacity can be attributed to a number of factors such as poor air filtration, a leaking air intake system or excessive contaminants being produced in the combustion process.

AMSOIL recommends changing the EaO13 Oil Filter according to OEM-recommended intervals in the following applications:

• 2001-2010 Honda
• 2002-2010 Acura
• 1992-2006 Chrysler imports
• 1993-1997 Ford Probe
• 1996-2010 Nissan/Infiniti
• 1971-2000 Mazda
• 1999-2000 Mercury Villager
• 1990-2010 Mitsubishi
• 2004-2007 Saturn

Upon request, the following options are available for customers who have purchased EaO13 filters:

1) AMSOIL will provide one WIX filter and one quart of top-off oil at no charge.
2) New EaO13 filters in inventory may be exchanged for two WIX filters.
3) For customers who do not want replacement filters, refund or Dealer account credit requests will be honored.

These options are handled through the Technical Services department.

For more information, see the AMSOIL EaO13 Oil Filter Technical Service Bulletin located in the Technical Service Bulletins section of the Dealer Zone, or contact AMSOIL Technical Services at (715) 399-8324 or [email protected].

AMSOIL Modifies T-1 Leads Qualifications

Last December, AMSOIL implemented a revised T-1 Certification Program aimed at improving conversion of leads to buying customers. The revised T-1 Program has enabled the company to more efficiently and effectively respond to prospects, while increasing the opportunity for Dealers to convert them into customers. It has also generated a lot of Dealer feedback concerning the new qualification standards.

After analyzing the numbers, AMSOIL decided to revise the qualification standards for remaining eligible for the Leads Program and Dealer Locator. These new qualification requirements take effect on June 1, 2010, when the current six-month grace period for all T-1 Dealers expires:

New Qualification Standards
A Dealer must earn commissions of at least $10 in the last six months and meet one of the following requirements:

• Have at least one new, personally-sponsored customer (Dealer, PC, RA, CA) in the last six months.
• Have at least five current, personally-sponsored customers (active Dealer/PC, protected CA/RA).

When a Dealer becomes T-1 Certified, he or she earns the right to participate in the many AMSOIL co-op programs. The next step is to register Dealers, Preferred Customers, retail or commercial accounts and generate a minimum of $10 in commissions. Once accomplished, the T-1 Dealer earns the right to participate in the Dealer Locator and Leads Program. While the qualifying requirements have been relaxed, they still require a Dealer to demonstrate the ability to register a new customer, earn commissions and service customers.

The lead follow-up requirements for Dealers who receive T-1 issued leads remain unchanged. When a T-1 lead shows up in a Dealer’s Message Center, he or she has two days to accept or reject it. The Dealer then has seven days to log into the Dealer Zone and complete the follow-up section for the lead. Failing to respond to three T-1 leads in a row, or failing to provide follow-up confirmation for three T-1 leads in a row, results in that Dealer being removed from the program.

One of the goals of the new T-1 Certification Program is to ensure that only Dealers serious about providing timely lead follow-up be allowed to participate. This goal will help improve the image of AMSOIL and the Dealer network and translate into more prospects being contacted and converted into customers.

Motorists Keeping Vehicles Longer, Paying More Attention to Maintenance

According to AutoMD, motorists put 50,000 more miles on their current vehicles than they did on their previous vehicles.

“Not only are consumers holding onto their vehicles for years longer but, more significantly, for miles longer, opting to repair and maintain rather than purchasing new,” said AutoMD President Shane Evangelist. “We estimate these car owners will be spending at least an additional $2,500 on repairs over the intended life of their vehicle.”

Almost half the survey respondents indicated their current vehicles have more than 100,000 miles, while 13 percent said they plan to drive their vehicles for 150,000 or more miles and 56 percent plan to keep driving until their vehicles die. At the same time, 44 percent indicated they’ve placed renewed importance on maintenance and repairs or they do the repairs themselves.

“Obviously, the economy is a big driver of that – people are trying to save money,” said AutoMD Vice President of Media and Marketing Services Brian Haser. “Look at how many cars are being sold every year. Compared to five to six years ago, that has gone down considerably. People know, ‘if I’m going to hang onto my car longer, obviously I’m going to have to do the basic things to keep it in shape, keep it maintained.’”

In addition to the desire to save money, the availability of vehicle maintenance information on the Internet has led to an increasing number of motorists choosing to work on their own vehicles. “That’s driving the market,” says Haser. “We’re seeing more and more users doing the do-it-yourself type of jobs today than compared to maybe 10 years ago.”

Gasoline Stabilizer Packaging

AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer (AST) is now packaged in the same bottles and caps as the diesel fuel additives. The label has also been updated, including a fully bi-lingual Canadian label. The formulation, treat rates, package size (16 oz.) and pricing remain unchanged. Due to the new packaging, the following stock codes have been updated:

ASTCN replaces ASTBF in the U.S.
ASTCNC replaces ASTBF in Canada.

Maine Recycling Tax

Effective May 1, 2010 AMSOIL will begin collecting the fees associated with the Maine Premium imposed on motor oil. The premiums will be charged on all orders placed on and after May 1, 2010.

Premiums apply to oil distributed and sold in the state of Maine. Both the pre-packaged and bulk premiums are imposed on the “motor vehicle oil dealer that makes the first sale or distribution of bulk motor vehicle oil in the State.” The premiums were implemented as follows:

The bulk motor vehicle oil premium was imposed at $1.10 per gallon for gasoline engine bulk motor vehicle oils and 35¢ per gallon for diesel engine bulk motor vehicle oils sold or distributed in the State.

Recent legislation expands the premium imposed on motor vehicle oil sold or distributed by motor vehicle oil dealers in the State to pre-packaged motor vehicle oil at a rate of 35 ¢ per gallon. The premium on prepackaged motor vehicle oil not only applies to crankcase oil but also to transmission, gear box, hydraulic and differential fluids/oils. The premium on bulk motor vehicle oil continues to apply only to crankcase motor oil.
The premium will be added to the cost of AMSOIL products based on the container size purchased as follows:

Gasoline
1 Quart Bottle            0.09
1 Gallon Bottle           0.35
5 Gallon Pail              1.75
5 Gallon Twin Pack   1.75
16 Gallon Drum       17.60
30 Gallon Drum       33.00
55 Gallon Drum       60.50

1 Gallon Bottle           0.35
5 Liter Pail                 0.46
5 Gallon Twin Pack   1.75

Ford Debunks 3,000-Mile Myth

Ford Motor Company issued an “automotive maintenance myths” statement last month that both debunked the traditional 3,000-mile oil change and promoted the use of synthetic motor oil.

“That [3,000-mile oil changes] used to be true, but not with newer cars,” Ford stated.  “Because of synthetic oils that don’t break down as quickly, consumers actually don’t need oil changes as often – more like every 5,000 to 7,500 miles – or even 10,000 on the new 2011 Mustang depending on your driving habits.”

General Motors has previously stated that traditional 3,000-mile oil change recommendations are outdated.  In June 2008, the company teamed with the California Environmental Protection Agency and its Integrated Waste Management board to promote the state’s “3,000 Mile Myth” campaign encouraging drivers to follow auto manufacturers’ recommended drain intervals.

AMSOIL developed the first extended drain motor oil and is the leader in extended drain technology.  As an increasing number of automotive manufacturers follow that lead, drain interval recommendations will continue to climb.

Dealers Targeted By Improper Solicitations

AMSOIL Dealers are occasionally targeted to buy products, make donations, participate in business opportunities or are solicited in other ways.  Although some offers may be legitimate, many are scams or inappropriate offers for AMSOIL Dealers.  Some offers imply they are endorsed by AMSOIL.  However, if an affiliation isn’t announced in the Action News or other official publication, AMSOIL INC. has not endorsed or authorized the offer.  AMSOIL INC. is not aware of or able to prevent most of these solicitations.  Dealers, therefore, are urged to exercise caution and evaluate opportunities on a buyer-beware basis.

New Outdoor 10’x10’ Event Tents Available

AMSOIL has made a special purchase of 25 10’x10’ E-Z Up Eclipse II Tents.  Ideal for both outdoor and indoor trade shows and events, these AMSOIL-customized tents (G2741) have an overall height of 12’7” and are specially priced for T-1 Certified Dealers.  The one-piece high-strength steel frame collapses down to 60”x12”x12” and comes with a carry bag.  The black 500D polyester top and four side walls are coated to resist water, ultraviolet rays and mildew, and are fire-retardant-treated to meet fire code CPAI-84.  The AMSOIL logo is printed on three of the four peaks and one of the side walls, and the tents include a set of heavy-duty stakes for securing in inclement conditions.  The full retail price of the tent is $1,030, but it is available to T-1 Dealers at a 50 percent co-op of $515 U.S. ($629 Canada).  The tents ship in two boxes:  one weighing 78 lbs. and the other 38 lbs.  Due to the limited quantities and large frame size, shipping will be from Superior, and actual freight costs plus insurance will be charged.  The tents are available while supplies last, but a secondary purchase may be made if Dealer orders exceed supply.
